damini mittai
Damini Mittai is a fashion designer, textile artist, and interdisciplinary researcher whose practice lies at the intersection of design, art, and social impact. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Fashion Design, and is currently pursuing an MFA at OCAD University, Toronto.
Deeply invested in the epistemological possibilities of textile waste, Mittai positions textile scraps as both the material and the metaphor of embodied memory revealing its deep rooted environmental consequences. Rejecting the idea of art as an isolated entity, she approaches making as a relational practice, one that engages communities, landscapes, and the planet in an ongoing dialogue.
Her work has been exhibited and presented at Amazon India Fashion Week; Google Art Placemaking, New York; Fashion for Good, Amsterdam; and Artist Project Toronto. She was selected as a Designer-in-Residence with Redress Asia, where she conducted research on post-consumer textile waste in Hong Kong, culminating in a month-long exhibition at the Hong Kong Design Centre.
She was recently invited to speak at the UN Fashion and Lifestyle Network during New York Climate Week, presenting her ongoing research initiative on textile waste, reflecting on land and labour. Her work and research have been previously featured in Elle Décor, The South China Morning Post, Design India Magazine, and CBC Arts Toronto.
