MOUNA RAGAM

This collection is a visual time capsule of the sartorial times of the 1980's in India. Why is the fashion of the 1980's so intriguing? Because it is a reflection of the women of a different era, an era where the country which was freshly independent (1947), and its new generation of young people were finding their footing in the world. Women who were free, strong and passionate. Women who were deeply rooted in their culture, but were citizens of the world.
This laid back, delicate collection is a result of me travellling through the fashion of the female protaganists in the 1980's south Indian movies and my mom's extremely classic and stylish 1980's photos. It gave me the freedom to do nothing and yet do a lot and and the joy of working with the gorgeous simple saris.
The collection is made from handpicked sarees, handwoven by weavers in Gandhigram Trust, a charitable organisation that empowers the local weaver families. Working with a sary instead of a usual fabric, meant working around its physicality of continous non conformity. It greatly affects the design approach, as it has different aspects like the border, the pallu, the main body of the saree and the part that is made for the blouse. And to make a dress from a sary is to confine the flow and change the intended design placement.
